(Aberdeen / Paris / San Gregorio) – The Scottish John Wood Group Plc is developing a large-scale green hydrogen production project in Chile for the French energy company Total Eren. The location is the municipality of San Gregorio in the Magallanes region in the south of the country.
According to the information, the order includes a complete off-grid energy complex. These include wind turbines with an installed capacity of ten gigawatts, an electrolysis capacity of eight gigawatts, a desalination plant, a plant for the production of ammonia (NH3), power lines and port facilities for the transport of green ammonia to national and international markets.
Total Eren had already signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Magallanes (UMAG) in November 2021. Based on Wood's preparatory studies, Total Eren and UMAG intend to carry out an environmental impact assessment and risk analysis for the Magallanes project that meets the environmental and social standards of the Chilean authorities.
Competitive green hydrogen
“With some of the best solar and wind resources in the world, Chile is one of the most promising countries for the development of competitive green hydrogen,” said Thomas Grell, President of Renewable Energy at Wood.
In December, Total Eren announced that it had already secured large areas of land in the Magallanes region. Hydrogen production should begin in 2027. The companies did not provide any further information about the schedule or the amount of investments.
