(Munich) - At the end of 2022, 814 hydrogen filling stations were in operation worldwide. According to the annual survey by Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH (LBST), there are concrete plans for 315 additional locations.
Accordingly, 130 new hydrogen filling stations were opened worldwide last year (2021: 142). In Europe alone there were 45. According to LBST, these were “more than ever before”. 73 new stations were created in Asia and eleven new stations in North America. With a number of 45, South Korea recorded the most commissionings compared to other countries (2021: 60). New additions include Colombia, Cyprus and Israel, where a hydrogen filling station has each been installed. “This means you can now fill up with hydrogen in 37 countries.”
Germany has 105 gas stations
At the end of the year, Europe had a cumulative total of 254 gas stations. The leader is Germany with 105. France is in second place with 44 gas stations, followed by Great Britain and the Netherlands with 17 each and Switzerland with 14 gas stations.
According to the information, a total of 2022 gas stations were in operation in Asia at the end of 455, including 165 in Japan and 149 in South Korea. The country is “expanding its infrastructure for all fuel cell vehicles,” according to the LBST. The company estimates the number of gas stations in China at 138; Exact data is difficult to obtain here. Of the 89 gas stations in North America, 70 are in California.
Most recently, gas stations in Germany (Berlin) and the USA (Pasadena) began operations in January of this year. Construction work began on another in Pajue-si (South Korea). A station in Pomona (California) is scheduled to open in February.
The website H2stations.org has been providing the basic data free of charge since 2005. “We license the data for professional use, including further detailed information on technologies and markets, and also create regular reports on new developments and individual evaluations for our customers,” says LBST Managing Director Uwe Albrecht.
