(Tianjin / China) – Commercial vehicle manufacturer Weichai Power is launching a hydrogen combustion engine. The engine displacement is 14,6 liters, and the power output is reportedly 600 hp.
Certification Passed
The WP15 direct injection engine for heavy vehicles passed the China VI certification at the Catarc Automotive Test Center (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. in early July. This was achieved under the operating cycle prescribed for heavy-duty engines. According to the company, the tests encompassed a full range of operating conditions, including cold starts, low-speed idling, high-speed full loads, and transient variable load changes, verifying the engine's emissions performance, reliability, and stability in real-world applications.
Suitable for machines and generators
The engine is suitable for long-haul trucks, dump trucks, port equipment, transport and heavy machinery, as well as large hydrogen-powered generators. Component compatibility with conventional Weichai engine platforms is 90 percent. This gives the WP15 advantages in load capacity, range, and environmental adaptability, thereby reducing production, retrofitting, and maintenance costs. The high tolerance for hydrogen purity reduces fuel costs for end users and accelerates the replacement of fossil fuels.
The manufacturer sees "great commercial potential" in its development. No date has been given for when the engine will be ready for market.
