Lhyfe wants to install a hydrogen production plant with an output of 30 megawatts at Ugitech's “Ugine” steelworks. © Ugitech
(Switzerland) Lhyfe SA is to install an electrolyzer for the production of green hydrogen at the Ungine steelworks for Ugitech, a subsidiary of the Swiss Steel Group. According to reports, the capacity will be 30 megawatts, enabling a production of twelve tons per day. The hydrogen will be used primarily within the Ugitech plant itself. The specialty steel manufacturer intends to use the energy carrier to replace the natural gas currently used in some of its facilities, thereby decarbonizing a portion of its industrial processes. The company produces approximately 200.000 tons of steel per year (for comparison: Germany's largest steel producer, Thyssenkrupp, produces around eleven million tons annually). The Swiss project could prevent the emission of 16.000 tons of CO2 per year. The two companies will now conduct a feasibility study.

The Stellantis brand conglomerate wants to build 100.000 fuel cell vehicles every year. © Stellantis NV
(Netherlands) The automotive group Stellantis NV is reportedly planning to significantly expand its production capacity for fuel cell vehicles. This was reported by the "Welt am Sonntag," citing the head of the hydrogen program, Jean-Michel-Billig. According to the report, around 100.000 vehicles per year are to be built by 2030. Battery and fuel cell drives are not seen as competitors, but rather as complementary. Stellantis has been offering medium-sized commercial vehicles with fuel cells since the end of 2022. The article states that 350 of these have been sold so far. Stellantis owns 14 brands, including Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Opel, Peugeot, Citroën, Maserati, Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge.

H2Site receives Approval in Principle from Lloyds Register for on-board ammonia cracking technology. © H2Site
(Spain) Hydrogen Onsite SL's (H2Site) "Ammonia to H2Power" technology has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the classification society Lloyd's Register. An AiP confirms that the development, by design, complies with recognized engineering and safety standards as well as all legal requirements. According to the company, the system allows for the on-board cracking of ammonia, for example, on ships. Hydrogen is produced in a container using ammonia. This hydrogen can be used directly in fuel cells, which contribute to the vehicle's power supply, or to power an internal combustion engine. "The technology offers ship owners the opportunity to convert ammonia and other feedstocks such as methanol into hydrogen on board without using additional gas separation technology," says Mark Darley, COO of Lloyd's Register. As previously reported, H2Site installed the system on the supply vessel "Bertha B" last November and tested it under real offshore conditions in the Bay of Biscay. Zumaia Offshore, Erhardt Offshore, Ajusa, Tecnalia, Enagas, and ABS were involved in the development.

New hydrogen production plant in Switzerland from Axpo and Rhiienergie. © Axpo Holding AG
(Switzerland) Axpo Holding AG and the utility company Rhiienergie AG have opened a 2,5-megawatt hydrogen production plant in the canton of Graubünden. According to the company, the annual yield is approximately 350 tons of green hydrogen. The plant is located next to the Reichenau hydroelectric power station in the municipality of Domat/Ems, from which it draws the electricity for the electrolysis process. The hydrogen is compressed on-site and supplied to filling stations and industrial customers. Construction on the project began in January of last year. According to Axpo, the investment costs amounted to eight million Swiss francs (8,2 million euros).

(Denmark) Green Hydrogen Systems A/S and the Danish engineering company BWSC intend to expand their collaboration. The agreement is a continuation of their cooperation on the installation of the X-Series prototype at the GreenLab in Skive, Denmark. A six-megawatt module for the production of green hydrogen was commissioned there. According to the companies, they now plan to offer complete hydrogen plants with prefabricated and optimized site layouts based on Green Hydrogen Systems' "HyProvide" X-Series module, which is designed for green hydrogen projects ranging from six to 50 megawatts.

(USA) US-based Plug Power Inc. has signed two additional contracts for the delivery of Basic Engineering and Design Packages (BEDPs) for electrolyzer projects in Europe and the USA. The combined capacity is 350 megawatts (MW). These agreements increase Plug's global portfolio of BEDP contracts to 4,5 gigawatts (GW), the company said. A BEDP typically includes the development of the technical details and documentation that a contractor ultimately needs to build the plants. Earlier this year, Plug already signed a 500-megawatt contract in Europe. Plug is currently supplying and installing PEM electrolyzers in Europe, the Middle East, the USA, India, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Australia, and Africa.
