TEAL Mobility markets hydrogen under the Total Energies brand through a network of filling stations that the joint venture develops, operates and supplies. © TEAL Mobility

(France) Air Liquide and Total Energies announce the creation of TEAL Mobility. The joint venture, owned equally by both companies, aims to accelerate the development of hydrogen for heavy-duty vehicles and establish a network of 100 refueling stations under the Total Energies brand on key European transport corridors over the next ten years. TEAL Mobility will operate approximately 20 stations in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany starting in 2024. According to the companies, the joint venture combines the expertise of both: technologies and the hydrogen value chain on the one hand, and the operation and management of refueling station networks, including energy distribution to business customers, on the other.

The German-Danish Chamber of Commerce has published a target market analysis for hydrogen in Denmark. © DDH

(Germany / Denmark) The German-Danish Chamber of Commerce has published a "Target Market Analysis" for Denmark. The 46-page report describes, among other things, the hydrogen potential, target groups, project developers and electrolyzer manufacturers, as well as the emerging hydrogen economy, including production technologies and framework conditions. Denmark aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 70 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. Furthermore, the national goal is to use 100 percent renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030 and to become an exporter of green energy. "The energy system of the future must be able to effectively utilize and compensate for a meteorologically fluctuating energy supply," the analysis states. Making renewable energies usable in all supply sectors (electricity, heat, industry, and transport) is a key challenge, and hydrogen is a crucial element. Synergies between different sectors are also important, such as the use of hydrogen as an energy storage medium, the use of excess heat from generation for district heating networks, and the utilization and thus enhancement of inexpensive wind power. Denmark is expected to become a key player in the European hydrogen market. The target market analysis was prepared as part of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy's Export Initiative Energy.

The document “Denmark. Production, transport and storage of green hydrogen. Target market analysis 2023 with profiles of market players” is available free of charge as a PDF (46 pages).

An energy business trip will take place from April 15th to 19th, 2024. German companies in the hydrogen sector are being sought. The registration deadline is February 16th, 2024.

The hydrogen-capable 600 MW gas and steam turbine plant will be built on the site of the existing Pulau Seraya power plant. © YTL Power Seraya

(Singapore) YTL Power Seraya Pte. Ltd. (YTLPS) plans to build a hydrogen-capable gas and steam turbine with an installed capacity of 600 megawatts in Singapore. The project will be an expansion of the existing Pulau Seraya power plant on Jurong Island and is estimated to cost $800 million, according to the Singaporean newspaper "The Straits Times." The plant is scheduled to go online by the end of 2027 and will initially be able to use up to 30 percent hydrogen and 70 percent natural gas for power generation. A retrofit will allow for the plant to use only hydrogen in the future, YTLPS stated. The project followed a tender issued by the Energy Market Authority (EMA). When announcing the award to YTLPS on January 29, the regulator stated that four bids had been received by the end of the tender period on October 31, 2023, according to "The Straits Times." Electricity demand will continue to rise due to economic growth, increasing electrification, and digitalization, according to the EMA. Over the next five years, projected peak system demand—times when users consume the most energy, typically in the afternoon—will grow at a rate of at least 3,4 percent annually, exceeding the 1,5 percent growth of the past decade. This is compounded by the electrification of vehicles. From 2025, Singapore will ban the registration of new diesel vehicles, and from 2030, all new car and taxi registrations must be clean energy models, including electric, hybrid, or fuel cell vehicles. Green hydrogen will become "cost-effective" by 2030, according to the Straits Times, citing industry observers. The cost of producing green hydrogen is estimated to halve by 2030, according to Kavickumar Muruganathan of the National University of Singapore.

(France / Germany) French green hydrogen producer Lhyfe has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with EDP Renewables for the supply of electricity from renewable energy sources. The energy will be generated by a 55-megawatt solar power plant, developed by EDP Renewables through Kronos Solar in Germany, which is scheduled to go online in 2025. The energy will be used to produce green hydrogen, according to the company. Lhyfe is building two production facilities in Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony, each with a capacity of eight tons per day. The hydrogen will be used in the mobility and industrial sectors. EDP Renewables entered the German market in 2022 through its acquisition of Kronos Solar and currently has a utility-scale pipeline of more than eight gigawatts in various stages of development.

(China) Green hydrogen producer Envision Energy will collaborate more closely with BASF Process Catalysts to integrate its "Synpire" catalyst technology into its energy management system. This is intended to maximize catalyst efficiency, accelerate the conversion of green hydrogen and CO2 into e-methanol, and seamlessly synchronize the process with the onstream wind power generation. Envision has installed a green hydrogen production plant in Inner Mongolia.

Sirius Aviation AG presents its new hydrogen-powered jet with Sauber F1 and Global Automotive Giant. © Sirius Aviation AG

(Switzerland) Aerospace startup Sirius Aviation AG publicly ignited its new hydrogen propulsion system for the first time at Payerne Airport. The propulsion system was developed jointly with BMW Group Designworks and Sauber Group F1. The event also saw the unveiling of the "Sirius Jet," a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. The aircraft will "completely transform the aviation industry," said Alexey Popov, CEO of Sirius Aviation AG. BMW Group Designworks contributed, among other things, the exterior and interior design, color scheme, and user interfaces. The first pre-orders for the hydrogen-electric propulsion system are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2025. By 2025, the Sirius Jet will be flying in two versions: the Sirius Business Jet, tailored to the needs of private customers, and the Sirius Millennium Jet for commercial aviation.

Executives from Performance Food Group (PFG) and Hyzon celebrated the delivery of four fuel cell vehicles with politicians in Fontana, California. © Hyzon Motors Inc.

(USA) Hyzon Motors Inc. has delivered four fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to the food distributor Performance Food Group (PFG). The handover took place at an event with local politicians and business leaders. "Getting these zero-emission trucks on the road is an important step toward decarbonization goals shared by PFG, Hyzon, and the State of California," said Parker Meeks, Chief Executive Officer of Hyzon. According to the company, the Hyzon FCEVs have a range of up to 350 miles (563 kilometers) with a refueling time of fifteen minutes. The hydrogen for refueling is supplied by Pilot Travel Centers LLC. Hyzon claims to be "one of the first companies to deliver a heavy-duty fuel cell electric truck in the USA." Meeks stated that they are also working on developing a 200-kilowatt system. PFG plans to purchase 15 200-kilowatt FCEVs from Hyzon, with an option for an additional 30 vehicles.
