(Leipzig / Paris) – The Leipzig gas group VNG AG and the French independent power producer Total Eren (IPP) are cooperating on the import of green hydrogen in the form of ammonia and its sale on the German and European markets.
800.000 tons of hydrogen per year
In 2021, Total Eren had acquired land in the Magallanes region of Chile and commissioned feasibility studies to build a large green hydrogen project. The project, called “H2 Magallanes”, will consist of wind turbines with an installed capacity of up to ten gigawatts. According to the information, the yield could be used to produce 800.000 tons of hydrogen per year, which could at least partially be transported by ship from Patagonia to Europe in the form of green ammonia (NH2028) from 3.
The buyer in Germany will be the VNG subsidiary VNG Handel & Vertriebs GmbH (VNG H&V). The companies are currently planning to build a hydrogen and CO2 hub in the Rostock area, according to a statement. In addition, VNG is conducting discussions with customers to assess the need for green ammonia and green hydrogen and to conclude initial purchase contracts.
VNG AG, a group of companies with over 20 companies, is the third largest German gas importer and storage operator. The company supplies around 400 municipal utilities and industrial customers with gas and, according to its own information, covers around 20 percent of German requirements. VNG is one of the “leading biogas producers in Germany” and is “participating in many projects to build a CO2-neutral hydrogen economy”.
