(Stuttgart) – The Baden-Württemberg Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection and Energy Sector will have a new demand analysis for hydrogen drawn up within the next six months. “We know that the hydrogen demand in Baden-Württemberg will be significantly higher by 2030 than previously assumed,” says Energy Minister Thekla Walker. “We need current and reliable figures from the various industries. This is essential for the expansion and conversion of the hydrogen infrastructure.” The last available data is from January 2022.

The country is therefore launching three processes together with a number of associations. According to the information, these include a communication campaign with numerous information events in cooperation with the regional chambers of commerce and industry. At the heart of the project, however, is the needs assessment using an online questionnaire where companies can, among other things, register their forecast hydrogen needs.
Finally, a scientific analysis by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) should, among other things, provide information on how hydrogen needs to be distributed and where hydrogen production should be promoted in the country itself.
Wired infrastructure required
According to current forecasts, hydrogen will account for around 2040 percent of final energy consumption in Baden-Württemberg in 15. With a cumulative energy requirement of around 197 terawatt hours, the hydrogen requirement is at least 30 terawatt hours.
Significant import capacities and a piped infrastructure are necessary to cover this, because Baden-Württemberg will only be able to produce a smaller proportion of green hydrogen itself, according to the Ministry of the Environment: “Determining and communicating the hydrogen needs in Baden-Württemberg is crucial for infrastructure planning and the fastest possible Connecting the country to a hydrogen network.”
Carried by a dozen or so actors
The new joint campaign is supported by companies, associations and institutions. These include the Ministry of the Environment, the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BWIHK), the transmission system operator Terranets BW GmbH and the electricity transmission system operator Transnet BW GmbH.
On the side of the business associations, the Unternehmer Baden-Württemberg e. V. (UBW), the German Gas and Water Association (DVGW), the H2vorOrt initiative (VNB), the Association for Energy and Water Management (VfEW), the Chemical Industry Association (VCI BW), the Baden-Württemberg Paper Trade Association (WVP), the Baden-Württemberg Energy Bulk Buyers Association (GAV), the Association of Municipal Companies (VKU) and the Renewable Energy Platform BW eV (PEE). The coordinator is the H2BW platform, scientifically supported by the ZSW in Stuttgart.
Companies can report their hydrogen needs on the “H2 for Baden-Württemberg“ of the transmission system operator Terranets BW register online.
