(Wilhelmshaven, Germany) – Uniper plans to launch the next development phase for the Wilhelmshaven hydrogen import terminal. Following a market survey in May, the energy company stated that there are now "sufficient capacity reservations." The completion of the Expression of Interest (EoI) phase confirms market interest and, according to Uniper Hydrogen, "forms the basis for the further development of the project through subsequent development, permitting, and commercialization measures." The company did not disclose the size of the project or the names of the companies involved.

The upcoming Phase 2 includes, among other things, the development of a terminal usage agreement. A binding capacity booking with interested parties will only be established upon signing this agreement. Should the market demand a terminal expansion, the modular design of the project allows for the import capacity to be increased to a maximum annual throughput of 2,6 million tons of ammonia (equivalent to approximately 350.000 tons of hydrogen). Uniper plans to conduct one or more additional market surveys to determine this.

The company announced the project back in 2021. At the time, the plan was to establish a "national hydrogen hub" in Wilhelmshaven. The plans included an import terminal for green ammonia, an ammonia cracker (a device that splits ammonia (NH3) into its components hydrogen and nitrogen), and an electrolysis plant with a capacity of approximately 410 megawatts (according to the figures at the time). The import terminal and electrolysis plant together would produce around 295.000 tons of hydrogen ( more information here ).
