(Cologne) – TÜV Rheinland AG wants to position itself as a testing service provider in the field of hydrogen with a “Hydrogen Competence Center” and thus bundle its activities for the extraction, storage, transport and use of hydrogen. The aim is to provide businesses worldwide with services along the entire value chain, explains its director Thomas Fuhrmann. The global team at TÜV Rheinland brings together well over 50 experts from all areas of expertise.
The “TÜV Rheinland Hydrogen Competence Center” is intended to serve customers in the plant and network operator segments, as well as manufacturers and users of hydrogen. According to the company, this also included the safe commissioning of electrolysis and carbon capture and usage systems (CCU) to capture carbon dioxide (CO2).
TÜV is currently also supporting the development of a specific standard for hydrogen applications in rail vehicles and the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure by assessing the safety of filling stations. In addition, a hydrogen test bench for gas appliances for the heating industry is planned in Cologne.
The establishment of the competence center should be seen as “a starting point for the further development of services for industry in all business areas” of TÜV Rheinland: from industrial testing to mobility applications, product testing, system certifications as well as training, occupational health and safety.
The production of hydrogen is energy intensive. Therefore, the “Product Carbon Footprint” is increasing as part of the hydrogen supply chain. From an environmental point of view, the production of hydrogen with renewable energies is therefore preferable. Strategies for future hydrogen use aimed to strengthen the expansion of climate-neutral green hydrogen. TÜV Rheinland also wants to offer this corresponding certification.
