Plano/USA – Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) and Hino Jidōsha KK (Hino Motors, Ltd.), part of the Toyota Group, are jointly building a fuel cell truck for the North American market. The “Fuel Cell Electric Truck” (FCET) is based on the newly developed chassis of the Hino XL series, which is expanded to include Toyota’s fuel cell technology. According to the company, the first demonstration vehicle is expected to go into operation in the first half of 2021.
Hino and Toyota have been cooperating with each other for some time and, among other things, delivered fuel cell buses for the 2005 Expo in Japan. Toyota has also been testing a hydrogen-powered fuel cell drive specifically for heavy trucks since April 2017. The original “Alpha” and the further developed “Beta” trucks have reportedly completed tens of thousands of test kilometers as part of the cargo handling in and around the Californian ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles coped. In April 2019, Toyota and the American Kenworth Truck Company agreed to build a “next generation” fuel cell truck.
