(Berlin) - German car manufacturers hesitate, Toyota creates facts: The Japanese company is placing 50 of its hydrogen-powered “Mirai” cars on the streets of Berlin. “In a few months” there should be 200. The user group is not limited to individual people: the vehicles can be booked via the Uber app for daily trips in the capital, according to a statement.

With this hydrogen fleet, a consortium called “H2 Moves Berlin“Offer a “sustainable mobility option” in commercial passenger transport and create “broad acceptance for alternative drive technology”. The aim of the two-year pilot project is to demonstrate the suitability of fuel cell vehicles for everyday use.

Only some of the hydrogen is green

The Toyota Mirai can travel up to 650 kilometers per tank of fuel and is therefore also suitable for long distances and continuous use. The vehicles would be refueled at one of the four hydrogen filling stations operated by H2 Mobility Deutschland in Berlin. According to the information, “part of the hydrogen in the project” comes from renewable energies, which the TÜV has certified.

Project partners are Toyota Germany, the British-South African mining group Anglo American plc and the Safe Driver Group, which specializes in automotive-related services, with its sister company Ennoo Hannover GmbH.
