Australian energy and mining multinational Fortescue is acquiring a 12,5 percent stake in Norwegian Hydrogen AS, becoming its third largest shareholder. According to the information, the investment amounts to almost 100 million crowns (8,5 million euros). Norwegian Hydrogen is currently building green hydrogen production facilities in Hellesylt, at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord in Sunnmøre, and in Hjørring in Denmark. The company also has plans to... Ålesund to build one of the largest factories in the Nordic region for the production of green hydrogen. In March this year, Norwegian Hydrogen founded the subsidiary Vireon, which is supported by Enova in the construction of hydrogen filling stations for heavy-duty vehicles in Dombås, Stavanger and Vestby in Norway. Fortescue is developing a global portfolio of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects, with two potential projects in Norway already in the pipeline. The Holmaneset project in Bremanger is a 300 megawatt green hydrogen and green ammonia plant, and there are also plans for another 300 megawatt plant in the municipality of Hemnes. Fortescue is the second global company to become the owner of Norwegian Hydrogen. The Japanese company Mitsui joined in August last year.

The transport company SWK Mobil Krefeld wants to buy ten “Urbino 12” hydrogen buses from the Polish bus manufacturer Solaris Bus & Coach. The first three vehicles will be delivered by the end of 2024, the remaining seven by May 2025, the company said. The buses will be equipped with a central electric motor with an output of 160 kilowatts and will also have batteries for additional electrical storage. Solaris says it has a portfolio of 450 hydrogen buses on order. 140 copies have already been delivered and are being used in public transport in several European cities. In Germany, Urbino are already operating in Cologne, Wuppertal, Hofolding, Weimar, Frankfurt, Groß-Zimmern and the greater Munich area. Further orders are expected from Aschaffenburg, Güstrow, Groß-Gerau, Hamburg and Duisburg.

Singaporean utility City Energy and Malaysian energy solutions provider Gentari Sdn. Bhd. want to jointly prepare a feasibility study to build a pipeline from Malaysia to Singapore for the import of hydrogen into the city. The study will be carried out over a period of twelve months. After completion, the companies determine the next steps for a FEED contract (Front End Engineering Design). Hydrogen is the largest component of the city gas produced at City Energy's Senoko gas plant in northern Singapore. Since 1991, Singapore has imported natural gas from Malaysia through the 2.623-kilometer Peninsular Gas Utilization Pipeline, operated by Gentari's sister company Petronas Gas Bhd. is operated. Singapore wants to become emission-free by 2050 and presented a national hydrogen strategy in October 2022.

The US-based Hyzon Motor Inc. has handed over a fuel cell garbage truck to the Australian recycling company Remondis. The truck was developed in collaboration with Australian waste collection equipment manufacturer Superior Pak. It is designed for a range of 200 kilometers and 1.500 waste transports per working day. The vehicle is now being put to the test in New South Wales in the communities of Wollongong and Shellharbour. This will make garbage collection quieter and reduce diesel consumption. If all expectations are met, the vehicle should be taken over. Remondis wants to gradually decarbonize its truck fleet. In the USA, Hyzon wants to have the ISO-certified platform for FCEV waste collection vehicles developed in Australia tested by customers in the USA from the first half of 2024.

The Hyundai Motor Company is participating in a consortium that wants to advance the use of hydrogen vehicles in Saudi Arabia. This includes collaboration in the development of a hydrogen value chain, the development of demonstration projects for hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles and joint research in the field of hydrogen-based mobility. Partners include Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH), Air Products Qudra (APQ) and Saudi Public Transport Company (SAPTCO). Hyundai is to deliver fuel cell vehicles to SAPTCO. KATECH is responsible for research projects and APQ will ensure the hydrogen supply in Saudi Arabia. The kingdom wants to reduce emissions to “net zero” by 2021 with a “Saudi Green Initiative” announced in 2060.

Toyota will transport visitors to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in converted fuel cell buses. After the competitions, the hydrogen-powered vehicles will be handed over to the transport service provider BE Green for further use. These are ten used Iveco coaches that will be equipped with fuel cell modules by the French company GCK, a group of eight technology companies. The diesel engine and transmission in the front part of the bus are replaced by a 370 kilowatt electric motor, batteries and the Toyota TFCM2-B fuel cell module. According to the information, the modules are already being used in trucks, buses, trains, generators and various maritime applications.

The Swiss ABB Ltd. supplies the power distribution systems for two newly built container ships from the Dutch logistics company Samskip Group. The 135 meter long ships are built by the Indian Cochin Shipyard Ltd and are powered by hydrogen. Diesel engines only serve as a backup. Delivery is scheduled for the third and fourth quarters of 2025. The freighters will operate on the approximately 700 nautical mile route between the Oslo Fjord and Rotterdam. In addition to the integration of 3,2 megawatt fuel cells, the order also includes, among other things, the installation of the “Onboard DC Grid” power distribution system. The project is co-financed by the Norwegian state-owned company Enova; the financial terms were not disclosed. Samskip wants to achieve a net zero balance by 2040. Each ship avoids around 25.000 tons of CO2 emissions per year by operating with fuel cells and using environmentally friendly shore power supplies in the ports called, the company says.

Universal Hydrogen Co., a U.S. provider of hydrogen services, and JBT Aero Tech Corp., a provider of airport ground support equipment (GSE), plan to jointly develop a hydrogen-powered mobile battery charger for electric ground equipment. The system, called “H2AmpCart,” can be “seamlessly integrated into existing airport operations to enable an immediate and cost-effective transition to true zero emissions,” the companies said. The development and presentation of the first demonstration unit with Ballard Power's "FCmove-HD+" fuel cell is expected to be presented by the end of 2023, production to begin in 2024 and commissioning to take place by the end of 2024. The Universal Hydrogen system was originally designed for hydrogen aircraft, but can also be used directly for ground handling equipment. The Oshkosh Corp. acquired the “Aero Tech” division from JBT Corp. in August. acquired.

Belgium-based electrolyzer manufacturer John Cockerill Hydrogen announced its entry into the US market. According to its own information, the company has acquired production space in Baytown (Houston, Texas) for a new Gigafactory. The plant is expected to create 200 new jobs and produce one gigawatt of electrolyzers per year. Existing buildings will be retrofitted, and production will begin in the third quarter of 2024. The location was chosen because of its proximity to transport routes such as railways, highways and ports, as well as because of potential users such as refineries and petrochemicals. There are also export terminals, gas storage facilities and hydrogen pipelines. In addition to the Baytown facility, John Cockerill Hydrogen already has a local office in Houston. The region was recently named one of seven regional Hydrogen centers in the USA, which is funded by the government with millions of dollars.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES wants to make the production of green hydrogen at sea tangible in the form of an online game. “Offshore – the H2Mare Game” was developed as part of the “H2Mare” lead project. This allows players to build an offshore wind farm based on current figures and research data, produce green hydrogen and test the technologies researched in the project. The aim is to collect as many points as possible within a limited period of time. The game was implemented in collaboration with Sapera Studios from Berlin. It can be played free of charge and without registration or prior installation at www.h2mare.info. It is compatible with common browsers for desktop PCs as well as smartphones and tablets. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research provided around 70.000 euros in funding for this.
