The Advent Technologies Holdings, Inc. wants to replace the coal-fired power plants in the Greek region of Western Macedonia and convert them to clean energy production with a consortium of companies as part of a project called “White Dragon”. According to this, solar parks will be used on a large scale to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis (4,65 gigawatts). This will be stored and supplied to the whole of Greece with clean electricity and heat via Advent's high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEM). In a related “Green HiPo” project, the company in Greece also produces HT-PEM fuel cells. The two projects, registered as IPCEI projects, have now been approved by the Greek Ministers for Development and Investment and for Environment, Energy and Climate Change.

Uniper SE and the Port of Rotterdam Authority want to connect Uniper's hydrogen plant to the HyTransport.RTM pipeline through the port of Rotterdam. This gives the plant a connection to the national hydrogen infrastructure and the Delta Corridor pipeline connection. This latter project aims to supply hydrogen to the chemical clusters in Moerdijk and Geleen (Chemelot) and subsequently in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE), together with partners in the H2Giga project, is developing new types of power converters “that not only meet the requirements of powerful electrolyzers, but also those of the power grids.” According to the information, the goal is to halve the costs compared to the state of the art, to ensure high direct current quality and to enable the use of electrolysers to benefit the grid. The inverter manufacturer is involved in this SMA AG, the TU Dresden and University of Bonn-Rhein-Sieg. The project has a duration of 4 years.

Loop Energy Inc., Canadian provider of fuel cell-based solutions, is working with the Russian developer of vehicle control systems Mettem-M Ltd. together to create a hydrogen-powered bus for the commercial vehicle manufacturer GAZ Group to develop. The twelve-meter-long vehicle is scheduled to be used in Moscow's regular services from the beginning of 2022.

The US manufacturer of compressors Eaton Corp. and the US fuel cell manufacturer Ballard Fuel Cell Systems Inc., part of the Canadian Ballard Power Systems Inc., want to develop a new fuel cell technology for heavy-duty commercial vehicles together with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the US Department of Energy. Eaton Vehicle Group had received a research grant from the US Department of Energy to develop high-efficiency fuel cells to power heavy-duty machinery. The new technology reportedly improves fuel efficiency.

Ballard Power Systems Inc., Canadian manufacturer of fuel cells, and the Quantron AG, manufacturers of electric drive technology for commercial vehicles, want to integrate the fuel cell modules from Ballard's "FCmove" product range for heavy commercial vehicles into the electric drive train of Quantron's vehicles. A 7,5-ton delivery van, a 44-ton heavy-duty truck and a municipal waste disposal vehicle are currently being developed. The use of fuel cell vehicles is planned for the second half of 2022.

The Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and Shell Canada Limited have signed a memorandum of understanding to produce low-carbon hydrogen through carbon capture and storage (CCS) near Edmonton, Canada. MC aims to build and commission the facility, near Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Scotford, in the second half of this decade. Shell would handle CO2 storage through a CCS project called “Polaris.”
In the first phase, around 165.000 tons of blue hydrogen are to be produced per year. The gas will be converted into low-carbon ammonia and will be destined for export to Asian markets.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Hydrogen Council, a global alliance of top industry managers, want to work together to advance the use of green hydrogen throughout the entire energy system. The two organizations exchange knowledge on best practices and data, in particular on electrolyser costs and volumes, policy frameworks, market design, certification systems, as well as technical standards and safety.

Chevron USA Inc., a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation, and Caterpillar Inc. have signed a cooperation agreement to develop hydrogen demonstration projects in the areas of transport and stationary power generation, including propulsion energy. The aim is to advance the feasibility and performance of hydrogen as a commercially viable alternative to conventional fuels for rail and sea vessels. The agreement also includes the demonstration of a hydrogen-powered locomotive and the associated infrastructure for hydrogen refueling. Work would begin immediately at various locations throughout the United States.
