In Berlin, twelve companies have accepted funding notices for the purchase of climate-friendly commercial vehicles. A total of over 450 applications were submitted under the “Directive on the
“Promotion of alternative, climate-friendly commercial vehicles and infrastructure” (KsNI). According to the federal government's own Now GmbH 320 projects worth around 200 million euros were approved. The projects submitted included around 2.000 battery, fuel cell and hybrid-electric commercial vehicles, the associated operational charging infrastructure was applied for 153 times and around 30 applications dealt with feasibility studies. The Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport will make a total of 2024 billion euros available by 1,6 to promote the purchase of climate-friendly commercial vehicles. In addition, around seven billion euros would be available for the development (or expansion) of refueling and charging infrastructure by 2025, according to a statement. The second call for funding for commercial vehicles and the associated operational refueling and charging infrastructure as well as an additional special call for special vehicles and infrastructure will be announced on June 15, 2022 published. The application is from June 29, 2022 possible. (Photo: © Now GmbH)

Paul Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH has developed a hydrogen truck that is ready for series production and presented it as the “Hydrogen Power Truck” (PH2P Truck). The 16 tons
heavy chassis offers according to the Company a total train weight of 24 tons. The range without a trailer is 450 to 500 kilometers, depending on the driving profile. The refueling process for the 30 kilogram tank takes 10 to 15 minutes. The maximum speed is 85 kilometers per hour, the continuous output is 120 kilowatts, and the peak output is 300 kilowatts. The drive comes from the Voith technology group, the fuel cells come from Toyota, the hydrogen tanks from Hanwha Solutions, and Pepper Motion provided the software integration and system architecture. According to the company, the first 25 vehicles are scheduled to be delivered in autumn 2022. (Photo: © Paul Group)

The steel group Salzgitter AG and the British-Australian mining multinational Rio Tinto plc want to work together to optimize the production of carbon-free steel. First of all, the use of “high-quality Canadian
and Australian iron ore products from Rio Tinto for use in Salzgitter's SALCOS project. Specifically, it is about optimizing iron ore pellets for use in the plant for producing direct reduced iron (DRI) using hydrogen. Rio Tinto produces iron ore pellets and concentrate at the Iron Ore Company of Canada, as well as lump ore and fines in Western Australia's Pilbara region. As part of the SALCOSprogram (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking), Salzgitter's carbon-based blast furnace route will be gradually replaced by direct reduction plants from the middle of this decade, which will initially be operated with natural gas and later with a steadily increasing proportion of hydrogen. The Swedish H2 Green Steel AB has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) from hydropower with the Norwegian state energy supplier Statkraft. The Vereinbarung has a term of seven years, starting in 2026. Statkraft
According to the information, supplies two terawatt hours per year to operate an electrolyzer with an output of 800 megawatts, which is intended to produce hydrogen at the Boden site (Norrbotten province). The contract covers around 30 percent of the electrolyser's electricity needs. The hydrogen is used instead of coke for direct reduction (DRI) of iron ore into pig iron, releasing water instead of CO2. The Boden plant will produce around 2024 million tons of green steel per year from 2,5, and by 2030 this should reach five million tons per year. In May 2021, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would invest in H2 Green Steel “with a single-digit million amount” in order to accelerate the availability of environmentally friendly steel. “As the startup’s preferred partner, we will bring green steel to the market in various vehicle models as early as 2025,” explained Markus Schäfer, member of the Board of Directors of Daimler AG, at the time. The US nuclear power plant developer Westinghouse Electric Company LLC and the Californian Bloom Energy Corporation want to work together to implement hydrogen projects in the nuclear industry. Objective is, “an economical solution for large-scale hydrogen production”
to offer “that supports the path to net zero emissions,” the companies said. At current production levels, demand for hydrogen will far exceed supply by 2050. As the use of hydrogen evolves “from traditional industrial use to the fuel of a clean future,” “the need to produce it in larger quantities and from low- or zero-carbon sources is evident.” The companies are “also well positioned to take advantage of the technologies developed by the US Department of Energy Hydrogen centers to support".
