Austria wants to import green hydrogen from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Minister responsible for raw materials, Elisabeth Köstinger (ÖVP), signed a declaration of intent with the UAE Industry Minister, Sultan bin Ahmad Sultan Al Jaber, in Qatar on March 6th. The agreement was concluded as part of a joint visit with Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens). The implementation of the plans still seems vague. It would be possible, for example, to transport hydrogen via the natural gas network, according to the Austrian version Federal Chancellery. The talks in Qatar focused primarily on the supply of LNG (liquefied natural gas). In the short term, however, neither hydrogen nor LNG will flow to Austria because the pipeline structures also have to be rethought, said the Chancellor. “We have a lot of north-south or east-west connections, but very few south-north connections.” Around 80 percent of Austria’s gas imports currently come from Russia.

The French automotive supplier Faurecia, part of the technology group Forvia, will equip heavy trucks from MAN Truck&Bus with hydrogen storage systems as part of the hydrogen research project “Bavarian Fleet”. For this project, which is funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs with around seven million euros, Faurecia is developing a new tank size that meets the requirements of heavy-duty vehicles and “other applications with intensive use”. Such an extra-large system enables greater autonomy. The prototype will be developed in the company's research and development center in Augsburg. From mid-2024, five selected companies will test the hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks for a year in the region between Nuremberg and Munich.
