( Palos de la Frontera / Spain ) – A few days ago, the board of directors of the Spanish energy and chemical company Moeve SA made the final investment decision for the first construction phase of the project called “Onuba”, to install electrolyzers with a capacity of 300 to 400 megawatts in Palos de la Frontera near Huelva ( we reported ).
15 electrolyzers, each with a power output of 20 MW
Thyssenkrupp Nucera AG and Moeve have now signed a contract for the planning, procurement, and manufacturing of equipment for the "Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley" project. According to the agreement, the Dortmund-based company will supply 15 standardized electrolyzers, called "Scalum," each with a capacity of 20 megawatts, for the first construction phase.
“Moeve is building one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen projects to supply renewable fuels,” says Maarten Wetselaar, CEO of Moeve. With a capacity of 300 megawatts, Onuba can produce around 45.000 tons of green hydrogen annually, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by around 250.000 tons per year.
Good prospects for green hydrogen
“The Iberian Peninsula offers one of Europe’s greatest opportunities for the large-scale production of green hydrogen,” says Werner Ponikwar, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Nucera. Large projects could “progress even in volatile markets and reach the final investment decision if the framework conditions are right.”
