(Food / Donaldsonville) – Thyssenkrupp AG has signed an engineering contract with US fertilizer manufacturer CF Industries Inc. for a water electrolysis plant to produce green ammonia at the Donaldsonville production complex in Louisiana, USA. Accordingly, the company will develop a 20 megawatt system based on alkaline water electrolysis technology and supply all necessary utilities.
Green electricity from the grid
In order to produce the green hydrogen, electricity from renewable energies is obtained from the grid. Donaldsonville is expected to produce 20.000 tons of green ammonia per year. The start of production is planned for 2023. With six ammonia and multiple fertilizer plants, CF Industries' Donaldsonville site is the largest ammonia production complex in the world.
Only in January, after completing a feasibility study, Thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers was awarded the contract to install an 88 megawatt water electrolysis system for the Canadian state-owned electricity supplier Hydro-Québec receive. According to Thyssenkrupp, it is one of the world's largest green hydrogen production facilities and is expected to produce 11.100 tons annually. Commissioning will take place at the end of 2023.
