(London / UK) – British company Supercritical Solutions Ltd has raised £14 million (€16,6 million) in funding. The investment round was led by Shell Ventures BV and Toyota Ventures. This funding expands the company's global strategic investor network. Other investors included Al Mada Ventures, Blackfinch Ventures, Kibo Invest, Niterra / Global Brain, TOP Ventures (Thai Oil), Earth Ventures, and Alumni Ventures.

With the funding, Supercritical plans to improve its technology and scale production "to a pilot scale." "Supercritical Solutions' membrane-less electrolyzer has the potential for breakthrough energy efficiency, which is critical to driving down the cost of hydrogen," said Ethan Sohn of Toyota Ventures. Supercritical itself is "confident" that it will reduce the cost of hydrogen production to the point "where it can compete with fossil fuel production, thus accelerating the transition from gray to green energy across all industries."

Target: one British pound per kilogram

The company claims to have patented a high-pressure electrolyzer technology that reduces energy consumption to 42 kilowatt-hours per kilogram of green hydrogen. The goal is to reduce the cost of hydrogen production to less than one British pound (1,19 euros) per kilogram this decade. Assuming the energy content of one kilogram of hydrogen at approximately 30 kilowatt-hours, this would be approximately four cents per kilowatt-hour of hydrogen (plus energy costs).

Supercritical delivers the energy carrier at a pressure of 220 bar, "unmatched by any other hydrogen generator," making it suitable for the chemical and fuel industries. The plant operates without the use of chemicals, membranes, iridium, or rare earths.

"Global demand for Supercritical's technology" is greater than ever, says CEO Matt Bird. The company has already received "several significant commercial commitments." Therefore, it is introducing a "waiting list" for the technology and is accepting reservations for delivery in 2027.
