(Dresden / Monthey) – Sunfire GmbH has taken over the Swiss company IHT Industrie Haute Technology SA, based in Monthey. The Dresden-based company is thus expanding its product portfolio to include alkaline pressure water electrolysis. This is “particularly ideal for use in environments where no water vapor is available, such as in the energy market or in hydrogen mobility.” No details about the acquisition were given.

IHT has commissioned systems with 240 megawatts

The Monthey location in Switzerland will continue to exist and will play “an important role in the production of the stacks”, the main components of the alkaline pressure electrolysers. IHT has already commissioned electrolysis plants with a total capacity of 240 megawatts. This year the company will “deliver and install Europe’s largest single-stack alkaline pressure electrolyser to regulate the power grid and produce green hydrogen in Tyrol.”

IHT Industrie Haute Technology SA, founded in 2003, develops and produces alkaline pressure electrolyzers for the industrial production of green hydrogen. The electrolyzers have a stack life of more than 90.000 operating hours, work at an operating pressure of up to 30 bar without downstream compression and have an operating life of over 20 years, according to a statement.

Sunfire's SOEC-based high-temperature electrolysis was developed in 2010 and was most recently delivered to the Salzgitter flat steelworks as the world's largest electrolyzer (we reported). The technology is particularly suitable for environments with industrial waste heat in the form of water vapor. According to Sunfire, SOEC electrolysis “requires significantly less renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen” compared to other technologies.
