Dresden-based Sunfire GmbH has delivered what it claims to be the “world’s most powerful” high-temperature electrolyser (HTE) for energy-efficient hydrogen production to Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. As part of the “GrInHy2.0” project, “high-temperature electrolysis with a nominal electrical output of 720 kilowatts will be used in an industrial environment for the first time.”

Salzgitter AG wants to produce low-CO2 steel using hydrogen as part of the innovation project SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO2 steelmaking) in the future (we reported). By the end of 2022, the electrolyzer should be in operation for at least 13.000 hours and produce at least 100 tons of green hydrogen from green electricity. In Salzgitter, several wind turbines are currently being installed on the company premises to supply the electricity.

“New and low-CO2 production routes are currently being intensively developed in the steel industry,” explained Nils Aldag, Managing Director of Sunfire. “The technology is ready for industrial-scale hydrogen production and we are ready to significantly increase our production capacity to achieve this.”

Sunfire and Flachstahl GmbH started the “GrInHy” project in 2016, which is now being continued as “GrInHy2.0” with the companies Paul Wurth SA, Tenova SpA, the French research center CEA and Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschungs GmbH. According to Benedikt Ritterbach, Managing Director of Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschungs GmbH and responsible for research and development in the Salzgitter Group, the project is intended to “provide further insights into the industrial demonstration operation of a high-temperature electrolyzer.”

The project is funded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (JU). The JU receives support from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research.
