Frankfurt. September 7, 2020 – At the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Frankfurt UAS), students want to simplify the production of hydrogen so that it can also be produced in private homes in a small system. The device, called a “smart hydrogen tank device,” should easily fit into a basement or garage and would be powered by renewable energy, such as a photovoltaic system. In this way, private households would have the opportunity to generate – and, above all, store – CO2-neutral energy. The project is financed by the “Research for Practice” funding program of the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art (HMWK). The funding amount is around 40.000 euros over a period of 12 months.
“With this project we want to show that hydrogen will play a major role as an energy source in the future,” explains Enno Wagner, Professor of Mechatronic Design and Technical Mechanics at Frankfurt UAS. The first step is to build a prototype. In the second step, Wagner's team wants to find a concrete application for the stored hydrogen and plans to develop an electrically powered cargo bike whose energy storage is not a battery, but rather hydrogen, which is converted into electrical energy using a membrane fuel cell. The Society for Gas Systems through Catalysis and Electrochemistry mbH (GASKATEL) acts as an industrial partner.
