(Trondheim / Norway) – The Norwegian research institute SINTEF (Stiftelsen for industriell og teknisk forskning) wants to investigate the use of ammonia as a zero-emission fuel for shipping. The Norwegian Minister for Climate and Environment, Sveinung Rotevatn, is supporting the “Ammonia Fuel Bunkering Network” project with 89 million Norwegian crowns (8,7 million euros) as part of the “Green Platform” initiative.

The project consists of an industry-specific and a scientific part. According to the information, an ammonia bunkering network for ships is to be developed under the leadership of Azane Fuel Solutions (a joint venture between Econnect Energy and Amon Maritime). SINTEF leads the scientific part of the project. The focus here is on researching technical hurdles and safety issues in the construction and use of ammonia-powered engines and fuel cells.

The potential of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel has long been known and we will now work on its implementation, says SINTEF scientist Cecilia Gabrielii. The research team will, among other things, conduct experiments and use modeling to improve the service life of fuel cells and the efficiency of engines.

Azane Fuel Solutions will develop, build and operate the first green ammonia bunker terminal in a Norwegian port under real-world conditions. Commissioning is scheduled for 2023. This is “an important prerequisite for the international introduction of ammonia as a fuel,” says Miriam T. Wennberg, CFO of Econnect Energy. In addition to SINTEF and Econnect, the project partners include the project developer Amon Maritime, the port operator Fjord Base AS, the ship supplier and service provider Global Ocean Technology AS, the fertilizer manufacturer Yara International ASA, the shipping company Viridis Bulk Carriers, and the engineering service provider HYEX, which specializes in safety aspects of gas and hydrogen Safety and the Arena Ocean Hyway Cluster, a network for maritime hydrogen use.
