(Munich, Germany) – Siemens Mobility will supply three two-car "Mireo Plus H" hydrogen trains to Deutsche Bahn AG's Südostbayernbahn line to replace diesel trains by the end of 2026. Production has already begun. The trains will have space for nine bicycles, high-frequency transparent windows for improved mobile phone reception, and low-floor entry and exit. The order also includes a service contract for the hydrogen energy supply system.

The basis is the "Mireo" regional train platform, which is available with electric, battery, and hydrogen propulsion. The fuel cells are mounted on the roof, and lithium-ion batteries are located beneath the vehicle. The H2 energy supply system, with a drive power of 1,7 megawatts (comparable to electric multiple units), ensures acceleration (a) of up to 1,1 meters per square second (m/s2) and a top speed of 140 kilometers per hour. The vehicle's range on a single tank of fuel is 1.200 kilometers, depending on the route and driving style. Depending on the station, rapid refueling takes approximately 15 minutes. The trains will travel on the 32,3-kilometer non-electrified line between Mühldorf (Upper Bavaria) and Burghausen, stopping at eight stations. DB will build an electrolysis plant in Mühldorf powered by green electricity.

“With the Mireo Plus H, we at Südostbayernbahn are driving forward the climate-friendly transport revolution on the rails,” says Cornelia Würtz, Managing Director of DB RegioNetz Verkehrs GmbH. Siemens Mobility and Deutsche Bahn first presented the “Mireo Plus H” at the InnoTrans trade fair for rail technology in September 2022. The first of these hydrogen trains received their approval in mid-December 2024 and are now in regular test service in Berlin-Brandenburg and Bavaria ( as previously reported ).
