(Munich, Germany) – Siemens Mobility has signed a contract with the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) for the delivery of twelve two-car hydrogen-powered multiple units based on the “Mireo Plus H” platform. This is the country's first order for hydrogen trains and one of the first hydrogen projects in Eastern Europe. The trains are scheduled to enter passenger service in 2029.

The vehicles are configured for a maximum operating speed of 120 km/h and can be operated in multiple traction with two coupled units. Each train offers 131 seats as well as five folding seats. In addition to the fuel cell-based electric drive system, the batteries are also charged through regenerative braking (recuperation). Siemens Mobility has optimized the vehicle concept to "significantly reduce" weight, component complexity, energy consumption, and maintenance costs.

The contract also includes maintenance and repair services for an initial term of 15 years, extendable for a further 15 years. Maintenance will be carried out on-site in Romania, including at a dedicated depot in Bucharest, by Siemens employees.
