(Berlin) - Siemens Energy AG wants to build a factory for electrolyzers in Berlin. Production is scheduled to begin in 2023. The infrastructure of an existing hall should be used, 
said the company. In the coming months, new production lines will be built in the Moabit district on around 2.000 square meters at a cost of 30 million euros. Gas turbines are currently being built at the site. These could already be operated with up to 50 percent hydrogen, and complete hydrogen operation should be possible by 2030.
According to Christian Bruch, CEO of Siemens Energy, both the individual cells and the cell stacks will be manufactured in Berlin in the future. These would then be “assembled into larger process engineering units” at the Mülheim location according to the required performance.
Manufacturing the electrolyzers with green electricity
Siemens Energy relies on PEM electrolysis (Proton Exchange Membrane), in which water is separated into hydrogen and oxygen on a proton-permeable membrane using electricity from renewable energies. The process is characterized, among other things, by high efficiency, high product gas quality and reliable operation without chemicals or impurities. With applications in the three-digit megawatt range, several tons of green hydrogen could be produced per hour. The electrolysers themselves are also manufactured using electricity from renewable energies.
