(Beijing / China) – Shell has put electrolyzers with an output of 20 megawatts into operation in Zhangjiakou, Hebai Province, China. The facility uses onshore wind energy and is expected to produce enough hydrogen to power a fleet of more than 600 fuel cell vehicles in the Zhangjiakou competition zone during the Winter Olympics, which begin on February 4. The energy source will then be used for public and commercial transport in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Strategically favorable location

The city of Zhangjiakou is strategically located about 200 kilometers northwest of Beijing between the capital, Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. In 2015, China's State Council designated it as the first national renewable energy demonstration zone.

The electrolyzer, installed by Shell and supplied by France's Air Liquide SA, is located in the "Zhangjiakou Integrated Green Hydrogen Hub". According to information, it is the second largest facility in China. The chemical company Ningxia Baofeng Energy Group Co Ltd operates the largest hydrogen production plant at 30 megawatts. The third large-scale plant has an output of ten megawatts and belongs to the hydrogen provider Beijing HyPower Energy Technology Ltd. It is also in Hebai.

Increase in output planned to 60 MW

The electrolyser is “the largest in our portfolio to date,” says Wael Sawan, Director of Integrated Gas, Renewable and Energy Solutions at Shell. They see entrepreneurial “opportunities across the entire hydrogen supply chain in China, including production, storage and transport.”

The project is part of a joint venture between Shell China and Zhangjiakou City Transport Construction Investment Holding Group Co. Ltd, which was established in November 2020. The electrolysers and hydrogen filling stations in Zhangjiakou are the first phase of the cooperation. The companies plan to increase output to 60 megawatts over the next two years.

Shell has six other green hydrogen projects in its portfolio worldwide, including REFHYNE in Germany and the Netherlands, NortH2, Port of Rotterdam Green Hydrogen Hub, Holland Hydrogen I, Hydrogen Innovation Hub at GZI Next Emmen and a hydrogen filling station in Groningen.
