(Ijmuiden, Netherlands / Bærums Verk, Norway) – The Dutch manufacturer of thermoplastic composite pipes (TCP) Strohm BV and the Norwegian engineering service provider Seanovent Engineering AS want to jointly develop solutions for the production of hydrogen from offshore wind turbines. Green hydrogen is generated decentrally in the wind turbine generator and transported to land underwater using a pipe structure.
According to the information, the TCPs produced by Strohm are “particularly suitable for the transport of pressurized hydrogen at sea and under water”. Unlike steel, the pipes would not become brittle. They are also flexible and lightweight, allowing “a variety of installation options, from cable-laying vessels to small construction vessels,” significantly reducing installation costs and total cost of ownership, the company said. The technology also reduces electricity production costs and decentralized generation makes hydrogen competitive more quickly, said Caroline Justet, Business Growth Executive at Strohm.
Seanovent Engineering is an engineering service provider that specializes in underwater infrastructure and covers the business area from system studies and concept development to detailed design, manufacturing and testing. This includes all types of projects in the maritime offshore sector, be it related to traditional oil and gas projects or other offshore energy projects.
Strohm (formerly Airborne Oil & Gas) was the first company to introduce its composite pipe technology into the conventional oil and gas industry in 2007. TCP is “a robust, non-corrosive, spoolable and lightweight technology delivered in long lengths”, resulting in a significant reduction in transport and installation costs. TCP is laid using small ships or underwater pallets, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions. It is also 100 percent recyclable. Strohm shareholders include Aker Solutions, Chevron Technology Ventures, Evonik Venture Capital, Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures, Shell Ventures, Subsea 7, Sumitomo Corporation and private equity investor HPE Growth.
