Kiel – The state cabinet of Schleswig-Holstein has approved the “Hydrogen Strategy.SH”. The state is providing funding of 2023 million euros for this purpose by 30. Measures for hydrogen production, the development of hydrogen demand, research and infrastructure development as well as concepts and feasibility studies can be funded. Companies that, as it is said, “install smaller electrolysis systems and develop new methods of hydrogen production” should particularly benefit from this.

Part of the new strategy is also a marketing concept to promote the north as a location for the hydrogen economy. Numerous projects in the country have already shown how the new technology can be used profitably. In September, for example, several logistics companies in Neumünster agreed to increasingly rely on trucks with fuel cell drives in the future.

Production, research and marketing of green hydrogen play an important role in the northern federal state, says Jan Philipp Albrecht, Minister for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature and Digitalization (MELUND). “As a country with a very high proportion of renewable energies, we have an enormous locational advantage to take a leading position in hydrogen production nationwide.”

In an initial statement, the CEO of the energy supplier Hansewerk Matthias Boxberger welcomed the hydrogen strategy presented. Given the size of the Schleswig-Holstein state budget, it is “a strong commitment to provide 30 million euros for the start”. In order to build a hydrogen industry, “billions of dollars in investments would have to be made available by the various players,” said Boxberger. But it is possible to raise these sums if you consider the sums that have been raised so far for the energy transition and grid expansion. We now have the chance to “turn green hydrogen from domestic production into an energy source for industry and mobility”. Hydrogen is particularly needed in heavy-duty transport and in industry. According to the Hansewerk board, it is important to “identify suitable locations in Schleswig-Holstein where both areas can be served in order to create synergies.”

Economic Development and Technology Transfer Schleswig-Holstein GmbH (WTSH) is responsible for the state funding program for the hydrogen economy. According to the state government, a coordination office will be set up there this year. Your central task will be to initiate and support green hydrogen projects in Schleswig-Holstein. It will support settlements and start-ups in this area, conduct public relations work and “network the players in the green hydrogen economy and renewable energy industry in close cooperation with the cluster initiatives in the country”.
