(Essen, Germany) – Essen-based RWE Supply & Trading GmbH plans to source 250.000 tons of green ammonia annually from India. The company has signed an agreement with AM Green Ammonia BV, a subsidiary of the AM Green Group. Initially, 50.000 tons will be produced at the AMG production facility in Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), with the remaining quantity of up to 200.000 tons being produced at the plant in Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu).
AMG's ammonia production plants are powered entirely by solar, wind and hydropower. This means that the energy source meets the EU standards for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) as set out in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). AMG's plant in Kakinada has already been pre-certified in accordance with RFNBO regulations. Pre-certification for other facilities is "underway", according to RWE. Delivery is expected to begin in 2027. A purchase agreement will regulate the details.
Capacity of five million tons
AM Green Ammonia made its final investment decision (FID) for its first million-ton green ammonia project in Kakinada at the end of August ( as we reported ). This marks "the starting point for the company's targeted production capacity of five million tons per year by 2030"—equivalent to approximately one million tons of green hydrogen. The alkaline pressure electrolyzers will be supplied by John Cockeril (Belgium).
The construction project in an existing urea plant includes a plant for the production of green hydrogen and the subsequent conversion into green ammonia as well as all associated infrastructure. Commissioning is planned for the second half of 2026. Most of the production from this plant will be exported to the European markets. In addition to RWE, there are also purchase agreements with Uniper SE, the Norwegian fertilizer manufacturer Yara Clean Ammonia and the Australian Keppel Infrastructure Holdings Pte Ltd.
AM Green was launched by the founders of Hyderabad-based Greenko Group, Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli, with Gentari and GIC among its shareholders.
