(Düsseldorf, Germany) – According to its own statement, the defense contractor Rheinmetall AG has concluded a framework agreement with an unnamed "major manufacturer and supplier" of green hydrogen for the delivery of storage and transport systems. The letter of intent (LoI) covers one hundred multiple-element gas containers (MEGCs) of various sizes. The order volume amounts to a mid-double-digit million euro figure.
Designed for pressures up to 700 bar
The containers are Type 4 hydrogen pressure tanks, which, according to the data sheet, are designed for 350 to 700 bar. They are certified for transport by road, rail, and inland waterway and are typically made of plastics such as polyethylene or polyamide, aluminum, and a carbon fiber reinforced composite material (T 700) as the interior lining. The length corresponds to a standard 20-foot container, scalable to 40 feet. The capacity is 1.100 kilograms (at 380 bar). The group also offers its own trailers for transport. Delivery of the first MEGCs is scheduled to begin in early 2026.
Production takes place in Neuss at Rheinmetall's Power Systems division, Pierburg GmbH, a subsidiary of the Group. The department builds mobility solutions, control technologies, and digital applications for the automotive and energy industries, among others, including components for hydrogen fuel cell systems and electrodes for electrolyzers.
