(Tampere, Finland) – Finnish technology company Nordic Ren-Gas has signed a €1 billion contract for the supply of green methane. According to the company, this is currently "one of the largest commercial partnerships of its kind in Europe" for establishing a cross-border supply chain. The partners are Avanca Renewables AG, a subsidiary of the Swiss service station operator Avanca Energy AG, and Alternoil GmbH, which operates more than 55 service stations offering alternative fuels such as bio-LNG and e-LNG in Germany.
Distribution via gas network
Ren-Gas integrates renewable electricity, green hydrogen production, biogenic CO2 capture, and district heating. The synthetic e-methane produced in Tampere, Finland – chemically equivalent to biomethane – will be distributed to heavy-duty trucks via the existing gas infrastructure. The agreement with Ren-Gas ensures "a long-term, competitive supply" and will be delivered directly to German customers, according to Jürgen Muhle, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Avanca Energy AG.
Partnership with Sunfire
Shortly after the offtake agreement, Sunfire SE announced that it had now concluded an agreement with Nordic Ren-Gas as the "preferred technology partner for green hydrogen and e-methane projects." The German company had already received an order from Ren-Gas at the end of 2024 to supply a 50-megawatt pressurized alkaline electrolyzer to Tampere.
The delivery comprises five modules of pressurized alkaline technology, each with a capacity of ten megawatts. According to statements made at the time, Sunfire was responsible for several phases of the power-to-gas project: from design and production to testing, delivery, installation and commissioning supervision, and performance verification. Annual production was estimated at the equivalent of approximately 200 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable fuel and 180 GWh of heat for Tampere's district heating system ( more information here ).
