(Augsburg) – The Augsburg car manufacturer Quantron AG has entered into an agreement with the US-based TMP Logistics Group Ltd. signed a framework contract for the delivery of 500 trucks with fuel cell drives. Delivery of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 15 tons (US category Class 8) will take place by 2024.
According to the information, the business has a volume of almost one billion euros and is based on the “Quantron-as-a-Service” (QaaS) model. This is based on the fact that customers do not purchase the trucks themselves, but rather receive them as a “service”, i.e. they are provided by the manufacturer along with service, maintenance, infrastructure and refueling. Remuneration is based on kilometers.
TMP Logistics Group includes more than a dozen freight forwarding, logistics and logistics-related software companies in the U.S., including National Freight Group, the largest contractor for FedEx Ground. Quantron AG is a spin-off from the commercial vehicle manufacturer Haller KG.
Great potential for trucks in the US market
Almost 100 vehicles converted by Quantron are already in use in Europe. For the USA, we see triple-digit potential in the first few years. Quantron estimates the US market for “Class 8” vehicles, which are to be electrified and equipped with fuel cell drives by 2030, at 280.000 to 300.000 units.
There is great demand for vehicles with alternative drives in the USA. The Biden administration wants to fund regional clean hydrogen centers (H2Hubs) across the country with $XNUMX billion.
To enter the North American market, the company recently founded Quantron US Inc. and appointed Richard Haas as CEO of Quantron US. Raymond Staples will be chairman and co-founder of Quantron-as-a-Service USA. The goal is to generate around 2025 percent of sales in North America by 50.
The Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs supported the development of the fuel cell truck. On the
At the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover in September, the company announced a collaboration with the Canadian fuel cell manufacturer Ballard Power Systems Inc. and the Indian vehicle manufacturer ETO Motors. Also in September, the Augsburg-based company announced that Ballard Power and Aachen-based Neumann & Esser GmbH would invest up to 50 million euros in Quantron as part of a financing round.
