(Budapest, Hungary / Latham, USA) – The Hungarian petrochemical group MOL NyRt. has partnered with U.S. fuel cell manufacturer Plug Power Inc. to build a green hydrogen production facility at the MOL refinery in Százhalombatta, Hungary. By using a 10-megawatt electrolysis unit from Plug Power, MOL's 22 million euro plant is expected to produce around 1.600 tons of the carbon-neutral energy source annually.
After commissioning in 2023, MOL plans to use the hydrogen in its Danube refinery to produce fuel, thereby replacing the natural gas-based production process currently used. This will make the MOL Group “one of the most important players in the sustainable energy industry in the region,” says its Executive Vice President of Downstream, Gabriel Szabó.
The MOL Group is an international oil, gas and petrochemical group headquartered in Budapest. It operates in more than 30 countries and employs around 25.000 people. The group operates three refineries and two petrochemical plants in Hungary, Slovakia and Croatia and has a network of almost 2.000 filling stations in ten countries in Central and Southeastern Europe.
