(Latham, New York / USA) – The US Plug Power Inc. is applying to the US Department of Energy (DOE) for a loan guarantee of 520 million dollars (436 million euros). Once approved, Plug Power plans to build the first network of carbon-free hydrogen production facilities in the United States to produce liquid hydrogen with a cumulative capacity of approximately 180 tons per day.

Each system will be built together with photovoltaic, wind and/or hydroelectric power plants. Plug Power is already in the process of negotiating power purchase agreements with renewable energy providers. “The first phase of the project associated with this credit guarantee will be anchored by existing customer contracts,” said Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power.

Cooperation with Brookfield Renewable

At the end of March, Plug Power and the operator of renewable energy systems Brookfield Renewable Partner had already agreed on a cooperation, according to which the companies would build a plant for the production of green hydrogen in the US state of Pennsylvania. The electricity required for electrolysis is obtained from Brookfield Renewable's Holtwood hydroelectric power plant on the Susquehanna River.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2022, the plant is expected to go into operation at the end of 2022 and will then produce around 15 tons of green liquid hydrogen per day. According to the information, the customer group includes the transport and logistics industry in the mid-Atlantic states in the northeast of the USA, including New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Plug Power also recently announced the construction of a green hydrogen production facility and substation in New York State with an investment volume of $290 million (€243 million). The location is the planned “Western New York Science, Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Park” (STAMP) in the city of Alabama. 45 tons of green liquid hydrogen are to be produced there every day for the northeast region. The plant will use Plug Power PEM electrolyzers with a total capacity of 120 megawatts (MW).

Through a network of plants, Plug Power aims to deliver around 2025 tons of hydrogen per day by 500 and increase the volume to 2028 tons per day by 1.000.
