(Rochester/NY/USA) – Plug Power Inc. is building an innovation center for PEM stacks and electrolyzers in Rochester, New York. According to the company, this is “a significant expansion of production capacity”. Research and development is also planned at the location, supported by collaborations with local universities. Commissioning is expected to take place in mid-2021.
Managing Director Andy Marsh is “excited to expand in our home state of New York” and build the innovation center in Monroe County. There were many options, but “none could compete with Rochester.” With a capacity of over one gigawatt, the center is estimated to produce seven million MEA (membrane electrode assembly), 60.000 stacks and 500 MW of electrolyzers per year.
To produce these volumes, Plug Power has optimized manufacturing techniques such as high-speed lamination, automated metal plate punching, laser welding and robotic sealing. Through this innovation center, the company will invest $125 million (€103 million) in the local economy, create 375 jobs and bring material and component suppliers to the region.
Ole Hoefelmann Head of the electrolyzer business
Shortly after the announcement of the new Rochester location, Plug Power announced separately that it had brought Ole Hoefelmann into the company as general manager of the electrolyzer business. He is responsible for sales, product management, product development and business strategy of the PEM electrolyzer offering. According to the information, Hoefelmann is an expert in the field of the global hydrogen economy. He gained his experience at Air Liquide SA in the USA, Korea, France, Spain, Portugal and Germany, among others.
