(Felixstowe / Great Britain) – In the future, green hydrogen will be produced in the port of Felixstowe in southeast England. According to the plans, these are systems with an output of several hundred megawatts. Felixstowe is the UK's busiest container port and one of the largest in Europe. 48 percent of the country's goods are transshipped there.
The Scottish energy supplier Scottish Power plc. checks together with the port company
Hutchison Ports to develop, build and operate the production facilities. The project includes the use of green hydrogen on land, for example in road and rail transport and in industry, although there is also the possibility of using it to produce green ammonia or e-methanol, explains Scottish Power. This, in turn, could pave the way to clean fuels for shipping and aviation and create opportunities for cost-effective export to international markets.
Hub for local and international markets
“The project could become a hub that makes a significant contribution to decarbonisation for the region and also plays a role in international markets,” says Barry Car Rüthers, director of hydrogen at Scottish Power.
The British utility belongs to the Spanish energy group Iberdrola SA, which is expecting investments
amounting to around 170 million euros. The first phase of the plant is expected to go into operation in 2026 with an initial capacity of 14.000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year, which will then be doubled. The hydrogen will supply vehicles and machines in the port and can refuel up to 1.300 trucks.
The port of Felixstowe is close to the offshore wind farms that Iberdrola is developing in the North Sea. The company has already commissioned East Anglia One with a capacity of 714 megawatts in the area and plans to build the East Anglia Hub offshore wind complex, which will bring together three projects with a total installed capacity of 2.900 megawatts: East Anglia One North, East Anglia Two and East Anglia Three.
Scottish Power announced in November 2020 that it wanted to develop electrolyzers for green hydrogen with an output of 2025 megawatts in Europe by 600. The Hydrogen division was founded at the beginning of 2021. By 2018, the utility had divested itself of its coal portfolio in order to generate electricity entirely from renewable energy. The parent company currently has a portfolio of green hydrogen projects requiring investments of nine billion euros by 2030, with the aim of producing 400.000 tons of green hydrogen per year.
Hutchison Ports is a subsidiary of the Chinese CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd., which operates numerous ports worldwide. There are thirteen transshipment points in Europe alone, including the port of Duisburg.
