(Regensburg) – Scientists at the East Bavarian Technical University of Regensburg (OTH Regensburg) are creating a “Hydrogen Atlas for Germany”. According to the information, this is an app with an interactive map. This means that the inventory of all Power-to-X systems as well as the value chains of green hydrogen in the individual regions should always be available.
The inventory analysis of the global PtX inventory is based on a database maintained by the Energy Networks and Energy Storage Research Center (FENES) at the OTH Regensburg since 2012. Its head, Michael Sterner, sees “enormous potential for use”: The hydrogen atlas offers the opportunity to assess potential, consumption, costs and emissions reductions at a regional level. This would provide “a comprehensive instrument that makes it easier to get started with concrete technical planning”. The stored database is being developed under Sterner's leadership.
According to the OHT Regensburg, the neologism “Power-to-X” (PtX) was first introduced by Michael Sterner in a study in 2013 as a collective term from “Power-to-Gas, Power-to-Liquid and Power-to-Chemicals”. : If hydrogen is further processed into hydrogen derivatives such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene or ammonia using various processes, “these technologies are called Power-to-X, where the says the scientist, “the conversion of green electricity into hydrogen and its secondary products: electrons into molecules”.
The three-year “Hydrogen Atlas” project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with around 700.000 euros. The cooperation partners are the Association of German Mechanical and Plant Engineering (VDMA) as well as graphic designers and web programmers.
