(Fredericia, Denmark) – The Danish energy company Ørsted A/S has started construction of its first green hydrogen production plant as part of the “H2RES” demonstration project. An electrolyser with an output of two megawatts will be built on the company's premises in the Avedøre Holme business park in Copenhagen. The electricity comes from a 3,6 megawatt wind turbine installed near the coast south of Copenhagen. The project aims to investigate “how an efficient electrolyzer can best be combined with the fluctuating power supply from offshore wind turbines,” it says. From the end of this year, the plant is expected to produce up to 1.000 kilograms of hydrogen per day, which will then power emission-free vehicles in the greater Copenhagen area and on Zealand.

The Danish Energy Agency is funding the project with 34,6 million crowns (4,6 million euros) as part of its “Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program” (EUDP). The H2RES consortium includes Ørsted, Everfuel Europe A/S, NEL Hydrogen A/S, Green Hydrogen Systems A/S, DSV Panalpina A/S, Hydrogen Denmark and Energinet Elsystemansvar A/S.

Renewable hydrogen is becoming an “industrial strength of several European economies, including Denmark,” while making “an important contribution to reducing emissions in the transport and industrial sectors,” says Anders Nordstrøm, vice president and head of hydrogen and PtX activities Ørsted.
