(Vienna, Austria) – The Austrian oil and gas company OMV AG and the state-owned Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (AWS) have signed a funding agreement for the planned green hydrogen production plant in Bruck an der Leitha (Lower Austria). According to the agreement, OMV will receive €123 million in funding. The 140-megawatt project was previously positively assessed and recommended for funding by the European Hydrogen Bank (EHB).
Commissioning planned for the end of 2027
According to Alfred Stern, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of OMV, the company is investing a mid-three-figure million euro sum. The plant is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2027 and will then be among the five largest in Europe. As previously reported , OMV will use the plant to produce up to 23.000 tons of green hydrogen annually using wind, solar, and hydropower. The plant will be directly connected to the Schwechat refinery via a 22-kilometer pipeline.
In November 2025, OMV and the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) signed an agreement to establish a joint venture (JV) to secure the financing, construction, and operation of the electrolysis plant in Bruck. The JV is expected to be finalized in early 2026.
“This mega-investment by OMV will sustainably strengthen Lower Austria as an industrial and energy __cpLocation,” says Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner. “One of the largest electrolysis plants in Europe is being built in Bruck an der Leitha.”
