(Muscat/Oman) – The Sultanate of Oman's oil and chemicals company OQ wants to develop a major project for green fuels as part of an international consortium. Intercontinental Energy (Hong Kong), a producer of environmentally friendly fuels, and the investor and developer Enertech Holding Co, part of the state-owned Kuwaiti National Technology Enterprise Company, are involved.

According to the information, the companies have been working on the project, which consists of solar and wind power plants with an installed capacity of 25 gigawatts (GW), for more than three years. The proceeds will be used to produce “millions of tons of green hydrogen.” This can be marketed locally, exported directly or converted into green ammonia for international export. Given the site's strategic location between Europe and Asia, as well as its excellent solar radiation and wind resources, it is "well positioned to provide a secure and reliable supply of green fuels worldwide at a highly competitive price."

The consortium has been carrying out wind and solar monitoring in the Al Wusta district in central Oman since 2019. The project therefore benefits from a very stable level of strong wind at night and reliable solar radiation during the day, according to the results. The electrolysis would occur near the coast and could use seawater.

The existing energy infrastructure in Oman offers options for the development of synthetic fuels, for example for the aviation sector. The project will improve the Sultanate's technical expertise in the field of renewable energy and create a significant number of high-quality jobs during the construction and operation of the plant. Given the amount of equipment needed for a project of this scale, it could also support the development of Oman's renewable energy supply chain.

Technical details were not mentioned, nor was a schedule.
