(Düsseldorf) – By 2025, the first large-scale hydrogen production facilities are scheduled to go into operation in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the first 100 kilometers of a pipeline network will be installed and 400 fuel cell trucks will be on the road. Energy Minister Andreas Pinkwart announced this when presenting the hydrogen roadmap for the country.
North Rhine-Westphalia laid the foundation for the development of a hydrogen economy with a series of pilot projects. Now “the conditions for a broad roll-out must be created”. According to the minister, the hydrogen demand in North Rhine-Westphalia will increase to 2050 terawatt hours per year by 104. “18 terawatt hours of this can be generated here,” it says, citing figures from the Jülich Research Center.
Hydrogen economy creates jobs
The development of a hydrogen economy and infrastructure will provide an economic boost. Up to 130.000 new jobs could be created. In addition, there are 13 project proposals with a volume of four billion euros as part of an initiative by business associations. By using the energy source, North Rhine-Westphalia could become largely climate-neutral by 2050, said Pinkwart. If used consistently, a quarter of the country's current CO2 emissions could be saved.
NRW is the second federal state with an extensive strategy. In October, Schleswig-Holstein's Minister for Energy Transition, Jan Philipp Albrecht, presented the “Hydrogen Strategy.SH” (we reported). The state is funding measures, concepts and feasibility studies with 2023 million euros until 30.
