(Düsseldorf/Moscow) – Pao Novatek and Uniper SE want to jointly analyze the extent to which the Russian gas company Unipers can supply power plants and markets in northwestern Europe with hydrogen. This includes production, transport and the development of a supply chain.

Both blue and green hydrogen

Companies are considering both green hydrogen produced using renewable energy and blue hydrogen produced using natural gas combined with carbon capture and underground storage in geological formations (CCS). Uniper managing director Andreas Schierenbeck sees Novatek as an “already proven supplier of natural natural gas” in a “good position to develop export capacities for hydrogen”.

According to its own information, Novatek is the largest private energy company that produces and sells natural gas and oil in Russia. The company is based in Tarko-Sale, Western Siberia. The company was founded in August 1994 and is listed in the RTS index on the Moscow Stock Exchange. Since 2017, Novatek has also been involved in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) business.

Uniper SE is a listed company that was created by spinning off the conventional energy generation divisions of water, coal and gas, as well as energy trading and energy storage from Eon SE. The company is majority owned (75 percent) by the Finnish energy company Fortum. The core activities include power generation in Europe and Russia as well as global energy trading and a broad gas portfolio.
