(Trondheim / Norway) – The Norwegian economic development agency Enova SF is supporting five new hydrogen production projects along the coast with 777 million kroner (65,2 million euros). This will help establish a hydrogen value chain for supplying ships.

The five new projects receiving funding are part of a network of hydrogen producers from Slagentangen in the southeast to Bodø in the north. The production capacity of the new projects is 80 megawatts (MW). A sixth plant in Kristiansand to the south with 20 MW of power has been in operation since 2022. The cumulative 100 MW corresponds to a production capacity of around 40 tons of hydrogen per day and contributes to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 200.000 tons per year. According to the Norwegian Statistics Office (2022), this is around 5,5 percent of national emissions from shipping and fishing of 3,66 million tons of CO2 per year. The energy source is to be marketed from 2027. The locations and projects:
- Egersund, Rogaland (20 MW): “Kaupanes Hydrogen” from Hydrogen Solutions, Dalane Energi and Eigersund Næring og Havn KF; 206 million crowns (17,3 million euros)
- Slagentangen, Vestfold (10 MW): GreenH in collaboration with Grieg Edge and Esso Norge; 144,11 million krone (12,1 million euros)
- Florø, Western Norway (20 MW): “HyFuel” by Hydrogen Solutions, Fjord Base and Sogn og Fjordane Energi; 180 million krone (9,05 million euros)
- Kristiansund, Møre og Romsdal (10 MW): GreenH; 118,66 million crowns (9,9 million euros)
- Bodø, Nordland (20 MW): GreenH; 128,65 million krone (10,8 million euros)
Norway has a long tradition "as a leading maritime nation," says Energy Minister Terje Aasland. "What we do here in the country to develop emission-free solutions for maritime transport" has an impact "far beyond our borders."
