(Phoenix, Arizona / USA) – US carmaker Nikola Motors has announced details of its hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) program. After starting production of the battery-electric truck “Tre” in North America, Nikola is now planning to introduce an FCEV variant as the “Nikola Tre Cabover” and a long-haul vehicle “Nikola Two FCEV Sleeper” with ranges between 300 and 900 miles (480 to 1.500 kilometers). . “To accelerate the transition to a carbon-free future, the trucking industry needs heavy-duty, zero-emission commercial vehicles designed to match the weight and range of today’s diesel trucks,” said Jason Roycht, Global Head of FCEV at Nicholas.

Tre FCEV prototypes are built in Ulm

The Nikola Tre FCEV Cabover is intended for distances up to 500 miles and is intended to appeal to the majority of the North American regional market. The vehicle uses the Tre's hydrogen fuel cell battery electric (BEV) platform and is designed to improve aerodynamics and reduce the vehicle's overall weight, according to Nikola.

Construction of the first prototypes is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2021 in Arizona and at the car manufacturer Iveco's factory in Ulm. Last summer, Nikola, Iveco and the Dutch industrial group CNH Industrial NV formed a European joint venture specifically for this purpose. Testing of the Tre FCEV is expected to last until 2022, with production starting in the second half of 2023.

900 miles non-stop on a hydrogen charge

The Nikola Two FCEV Sleeper has optional bunks and can travel 900 miles non-stop on one tank of fuel. The truck is based on a new chassis designed specifically for North American long-haul routes and is expected to hit the market in late 2024.

Nikola Tre and Nikola Two FCEVs are expected to utilize multiple common fuel cell energy modules and scalable hydrogen storage systems, according to the company. Both systems are currently in development and testing.
