(Ulm) – The US car manufacturer Nikola Corporation, the Italian commercial vehicle manufacturer Iveco and the long-distance network operator Open Grid Europe GmbH (OGE) are planning a joint project to transport hydrogen via pipes from various production sites to truck hydrogen filling stations. First, the responsibilities and the principles of cooperation should be specified. The companies then want to define and agree on the goals.

“We believe that the collaboration, especially in this constellation, offers a convincing long-term solution for filling station infrastructure that will strengthen the acceptance of FCEV technologies in the industry and the market as a whole,” said Pablo Koziner, President Energy and Commercial at Nikola. With the introduction of hydrogen and battery-powered heavy commercial vehicles, the “transport ecosystem” will change, as will the current business models along the value chain,” explains Gerrit Marx, President Commercial & Specialty Vehicles at the CNH Industrial group, which also includes Iveco.

According to technical managing director Thomas Hüwener, OGE is committed to “building a pipeline infrastructure for the transport of hydrogen from the production sites to the important network exit points”. Open Grid is also involved in the “European Hydrogen Backbone Initiative” (EHB), which aims to build a 40.000 kilometer long hydrogen network connecting 21 European countries (we reported).
