(Bucharest / Romania) – OMV Petrom SA, the largest energy producer in Southeast Europe, is receiving the first electrolysis module for the production of green hydrogen at its Petrobrazi refinery located north of Bucharest. Once operational, the green hydrogen produced will be used to manufacture sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and e-diesel.

20 megawatts of power in the final expansion

“This is an important step towards transforming the refinery into the largest center for sustainable fuel production in the region” and contributes to achieving the country’s sustainability goals, says Radu Căprău, member of the OMV Petrom board of directors. The company estimates the total capacity at 20 megawatts once fully operational, with the remaining modules to be delivered in the coming months. This will bring the total capacity to approximately 3.000 tons of green hydrogen per year. The company is receiving €21 million in EU funding for the first construction phase.

OMV Petrom's plans, in which the Austrian petrochemical company OMV AG holds a majority stake, reportedly require total investments of €750 million. This includes the e-fuels unit and two hydrogen production plants with a combined capacity of 55 megawatts and an annual output of 8.000 tons. The annual e-fuels capacity is 250.000 tons. Construction began last year, and production is scheduled to start in 2028.

The equipment is being supplied by Neuman & Esser GmbH from Germany. Local suppliers are handling the integration of the modules within the Petrobrazi refinery.
