(Madrid/Spain) – Representatives from industry, science and politics have founded the “Spanish Hydrogen Network” (SHYNE). The aim is to promote and advance the decarbonization of the country's economy through renewable hydrogen. To achieve this, SHYNE will launch projects with a total investment of 3,23 billion euros aimed at the development of competitive technologies by Spanish industry and decarbonization. This is expected to create more than 13.000 jobs.

Electrolyzers with two gigawatts by 2030

The consortium wants to install hydrogen production facilities with an output of 2025 megawatts by 500, and two gigawatts by 2030. This is half of the target set in October 2020 in the hydrogen roadmap published by the Spanish government.

In addition, projects across the entire value chain are supported, including the installation of renewable energy systems. In addition, there is the integration of hydrogen in all transport segments, the production of synthetic fuels and the creation of an infrastructure with at least twelve hydrogen filling stations by 2025.

Include hydrogen initiatives that are already underway

SHYNE is also intended to connect existing regional hydrogen initiatives such as the Basque Region Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C), the Catalonia Region Hydrogen Valley and the Murcia Region Hydrogen Valley. In addition, two new innovation centers will be supported in the regions of Castile-La Mancha and Madrid. A center is being created in the capital that will coordinate cross-sectoral measures and position the technology centers and universities involved as references in Europe.

National cooperation network

The consortium of 33 participants so far is “a national cooperation network” that supports all projects to promote competitiveness and the creation of high-quality jobs, according to a statement from the leading energy group Rapsöl SA: “The companies involved will provide Spain with technological support Bringing the forefront of renewable hydrogen to Europe.”

Repsol is mainly supported by Alsa Group (bus company), Robert Bosch España, SLU (components), Celsa Group (steel manufacturer), Enagas SA (gas network operator), Scania Hispania SA (commercial vehicles) and Talgo SA (railway technology).

There are also other cooperation partners such as the Spanish Hydrogen Association (AEH2), the National Center for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (CNH2), the Spanish Society for Ceramics and Glass, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Center for Automotive Technology of the Galicia Region (CTAG) , the Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in the Region of Aragon (FHa), the Energy Research Institute of the Region of Catalonia (IREC), the TECNALIA and Cidetec institutes and the universities of Castile-La Mancha and Alicante. Aviation and maritime companies such as Iberia and Balearia are also involved, as are shipyards, steel manufacturers, power producers and engineering offices.
