(Issy-Les-Moulineaux / France) – Nestlé Waters, Swiss bottler and distributor of mineral waters and lemonades, wants to use a hydrogen fuel cell train to transport bulk goods by rail from 2025. The vehicle and infrastructure are being developed by the French train manufacturer Alstom and the energy supplier Engie.

The freight train will be used between the Nestlé factory in Vittel in the Vosges and various distribution centers in France. The dual-mode solution features a generator car with a high-performance fuel cell system that is powered by renewable hydrogen. The car is therefore able to supply the locomotive with electricity on routes without overhead lines. Engie provides the green hydrogen.

With this and other projects, Nestlé Waters is well on its way to minimizing the environmental impact of the company's transportation, which accounts for a quarter of its carbon footprint.
