(Oslo/Tempe) – Norwegian company Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, a division of Nel ASA, has announced its collaboration with US solar company First Solar, Inc. Together they want to combine hydrogen power plants with photovoltaics (PV). First Solar is a manufacturer of thin-film modules and a developer of industrial-scale solar power plants.

The aim is to expand the product offering for end customers in order to “achieve the lowest overall cost of converting solar power into hydrogen,” says Jon André Løkke, Chief Executive Officer of Nel. First, First Solar and Nel will develop an integrated power plant control system (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, SCADA). The network architecture will enable the optimization of PV-electrolyzer hybrid projects. Over time, further opportunities to optimize and integrate technology elements throughout the solar and hydrogen production facility would be explored. “As solar energy becomes mainstream, this is a great example of how we are powering the new alternatives,” said Mark Widmar, Chief Executive Officer of First Solar.
