(Oslo/Norway) – Norwegian electrolyser manufacturer NEL ASA has signed a contract with Everfuel A/S to build a 20 megawatt plant to produce green hydrogen. The location is right next to a Shell refinery in Fredericia, Denmark.
The hydrogen is produced using wind power. The production capacity is eight tons per day and the storage capacity is ten tons. The electrolyzer will be delivered in 2021 and is expected to be fully operational by mid-2022. According to a previous announcement, the capacity at the site can be increased up to one gigawatt.
The main buyer of hydrogen is Shell
Everfuel will be the owner and operator, Shell will be the main buyer of the hydrogen. Everfuel will also install hydrogen storage and charging stations for hydrogen trailers and operate hydrogen trailers to supply Denmark with the gas. Already in the planning phase, Everfuel secured a grant of six million euros from the Danish Energy Agency at the end of 2019 for the project called “HySynergy”.
“The plant will form the backbone for renewable hydrogen supply in Denmark, both for the refinery itself and for the fuel cell vehicles in the area,” said Jon André Løkke, CEO of Nel. The company holds a minority stake of 19,9 percent in Everfuel, 80,1 percent belongs to EF Holding.
Joint venture for market development in Norway
In mid-November, Nel and Everfuel had already agreed to establish a joint venture to develop the hydrogen market for private and truck customers in Norway. Everfuel will take over 51 percent of the shares in “H2Fuel Norway AS”. The company will be renamed Everfuel Norway Retail AS in early 2021. Nel will hold the remaining 49 percent of the shares.
